Deteration is an exploration of the build up of sound and then its eventual decay. Texture has always been the most interesting part of music to me, and here I really wanted to explore what was possible within a large scale work. The piece opens with a homage to acousmatic music, focusing on evolving intensity and the subtleties that lie within a wall of sound. A running theme is present of the contrast between consonance and dissonance - unidentifiable sounds are mixed for example with horns breaking out of the mist, as well as organ breakdowns focusing on harmony. The remainder of the first half carries on this theme before around the half way part a shift is made in to a more beat based focus. I’ve always practiced developing drums as you would melody, and in the second half I look at what is possible with this within the realm of minimalism. Throughout Deteration, themes come and go but the elements of each remain present throughout. The idea is that once something ends, its essence is always there regardless.
